A New Form of Duck Soup
We started them first on Amoxi and Tribressin, while receiving Carafate 4 times a day for the grinding teeth. This didn't work and we were definitely going to lose Kermit within a day or so, soon to be followed by Snowball and Potatoe, and Scooter. All the duck soup recipes with Sustical or Ensure only made them worse. We then switched them to a regimen of Clavomox, and Bioxin for 14 days, and maintained the Carafate, while feeding them via syringe every four hours. Below is what worked for me. Both must be prepared then mixed. Believe me, this will work if you can discipline yourself to keep it going. We had nine desperately sick fuzzies, and have not lost a one.

PART 1 - * Four boneless chicken breasts
Place in med pan boiling water 15 minutes. Save all to include liquid. Run all contents through an ice crushing capable blender until you are able to run it smooth on 'liquefy'. Add two full tubes of FerretVite or Nutri-cal, 1/2 cup FerreTone, 4 tbs olive oil
Now obtain, and prepare the following. This is what saved my guys along with the antibiotic therapy. This was given to me by Dee Harris (Aukukas), and it made all the difference.

PART 2 -*
  • 1 Capsule DHEA 25 mg. ( Do not use for breeding stock)
  • 2 Papaya enzyme
  • 1 capsule vitamin E 400 IU (Use the d-alpha NOT the dl-alpha)
  • 1 tablet chromium 200 mcg.
  • 1 capsule Co-Enzyme Q 10 10 mg. to 30 mg.
  • 2 capsules Pau D'Arco 505 mg.ea.
  • 1 capsule Alpha lipoic acid 50 mg.
  • 1 tablet B complex
  • 1 Tables. powdered brewers yeast
  • 4 capsule Echinacea
  • 4 capsules Slippery Elm
  • 2 capsule Cranberry
  • 1 capsule Milk Thistle
  • 2 capsules Dandelion Root
  • 1 tablet Alfalfa concentrate (500 mg.)
  • 4 capsules Nettle
  • 1 capsule Acidophillus culture
  • 1 Tables. FerreTone
  • 3 cc. Liqui-Tinic x4, or 6cc. Pet Tinic (from your veterinarian)
  • 2 cups high quality kitten food (Iams), or ferret food
  • 3 cups water or pedialyte (if dehydrated) I use pure spring water only. Do not use pedialyte if your ferret is insulinomic. Use pure water only.

All of the above are available at a health food store...............

After this has sat for an hour or more, put in a food processor or blender for about 3 minutes until it is smooth and no lumps.....I put it in 1/2 cup yogurt containers (makes about 18 ) and freeze....

I also give my ferrets heavy (whipping) cream with a little acidophilus culture in it, and sometimes the raw yolk of a farm fresh egg, weekly. Daily, if they are sick or underweight....will not cause diarrhea as some people will tell you. Very little lactose in cream......but only give about a teaspoon at a time to start.... Nupro is another wonderful supplement.

I don't need to tell you to see your veterinarian first and have a fecal, CBC, etc...done....it could be Coccidia, Giardia, Helicobacter etc.,in which case, you may want to treat with a Suflonamide ( Albon, Bacrove. Tribrissen). Use a 5% oral suspension @ 5.5 mg/kg body wt for the first day, then 2.7 mg/kg for 4 days or until asymptomatic for 48 hrs.
