It was named after the first ferret for whom it was made to help her through an illness. Duck soup is not the same thing as Chicken Gravy, which is actually more of a natural meal rather than a supplement. Chicken Gravy generally contains ground up bones, organs and other items that make it similar to the complete diet a ferret would eat in the wild. Many ferret owners feed it in place of regular kibble. Duck soup is an easy to digest gruel meant to supplement your ferret's regular diet.
Duck soup should be given to ferrets when they are sick or recovering from surgery, or when something else is going on that makes them refuse to eat their kibble. But you never want to drastically change a ferret's diet, as it can cause health problems (diarrhea, difficulty digesting the new food, and other conditions). Obviously this is something you want to avoid if the ferret is already ill! This is why it's best to give them duck soup before they actually need it. Then when they do need it, they're already used to it, and it's not something new in an already stressful health situation.
